Individuals Stopping Slimming Jabs Regain Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Than Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

A recent study reveals that individuals who discontinue popular GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional diet and exercise programs.

Published data in a major medical journal points out that while obese people can lose a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"People using such treatments should be informed of the risk of fast weight regain when the treatment is stopped," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery means a return to pre-treatment mass within about one and a half years.

Weighing Therapies

The research, which reviewed dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with other pills.

Researchers note that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise usually see a less rapid weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

The Reason for the Fast Rebound

Doctors believe the mechanism of the injections is key to understanding the heightened weight return.

The injections imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing the hormone levels several times higher than normal could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could lessen responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Withdrawal of this medication results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating much more probable."

A Chronic Issue?

The NHS suggest the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals contend that, considering the high risk of relapse, the treatment is often long-term.

This perspective is supported by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "underscore the persistent nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.

Patient Testimonies

Users who have discontinued the jabs describe a intense return of hunger.

"It was like a trigger flipping and you become ravenous," recalled one woman.

The struggle is compounded if patients have not established lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Significant Adoption

Survey data show that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest being substantial.

  • Use is higher among women than males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, experts emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and lasting health benefits hinges on integrated lifestyle changes.
